Koh Rong Sanloem island is located in the Gulf of Thailand about 25 km (16 mi) off the coast of Sihanoukville and 4 km (2 mi) south of Koh Rong island.
How did we get here? Our choices were a six hour cheap bus ride or a taxi. We hired a private taxi from our hotel in Phnom Pehn. According to little Ms. Google our drive was going to take well over 4 hours. The hotel staff staff suggested we leave at 9:30 to be sure we made the 2:30pm ferry. Our driver was already waiting for us at 9:20. He drove us to the ferry station in Sihanoukville which took a little over 2 1/2 hours. We paid the toll ($12) for the expressway which had very little traffic. a) most Cambodians don't own a car, b) most wouldn't pay the toll even if they owned one.
There are multiple ferry companies. The resort told us which ferry to take (Buva Sea) which dropped us off at the pier closest to the resort. It was kind of funny since it didn't look like there were any other piers in the bay that could accommodate a ferry. So we purchased our tickets online. All we had to do was check in and wait 2 1/2 hours in their waiting room (plastic chairs in a warehouse) and no bathroom. We walked to a very small outdoor restaurant to get some lunch. We ordered fried noodles with seafood and a chicken sandwich. The noodles came with beef (no seafood) and the chicken sandwich had no chicken (worst sandwich I've ever had).
Right next to the restaurant was a bathroom and we had to pay 1,000 riel (.25) to use. It was disgusting. At least it was a toilet and not just a hole in the ground. No picture! 📸
Back to the plastic chairs,. Around 2:15 we were herded to the ferry. They stowed our luggage based on where we were staying. It was a 30 minute ride to the island. At one point water splashed inside right where I was sitting. So much for front row seating!
Once we arrived at the pier, we disembarked and waited for our luggage. I literally have no idea how the pier held all the weight. It was a good thing the resort told us which ferry to take but they failed to mention a longtail boat would take us from the pier to the resort. We're discovering we may not know what we're doing or how we're getting somewhere but the Cambodians sure do! So we just kind of go with the flow.
Where did we stay? At the Sara Resort in a deluxe double bungalow with a garden view. It was a cute little bungalow. It was located in the center of Saracen Bay. The downside to this hotel was no refrigerator or coffee in the room but the bar and restaurant was just a two second walk. Plus we have a small collapsible cooler for just such an 'emergency'.
What did we do? To be honest not very much. We walked 🚶♀️🚶♀️ to Lazy Beach which was pretty easy to walk to.
We walked to the waterfall. We were warned that it was not much of a waterfall, just a trickle. Imagine our surprise when we saw a sign 😳 👀 that said we had to pay $1 to walk to the waterfall. We of course had no money on us and the guy let us go anyway.
We saw a Fireshow!
We walked to Sunset Beach ⛱. No one told us it was a hike although we were advised to wear shoes (not flip flops). The hike started out fairly easy but 2 seconds in I was flat on my a$$ crossing a bridge.
Once we arrived we were surprised at how much was located on the other side of the island. There were 2 resorts, coffee shop, yoga, and a restaurant 😋. I sat on the beach while Rob walked the beach. As I was sitting a man asked if I would watch his "stuff" so he could go for a swim. Little did i know he was going to change his clothes right beside me. At least when the underwear came off he had a towel wrapped around him. He was on holiday from Germany.
Later that evening, we listened to some live music 🎶 🎵. Chocolate Martini's 🍫 😋 were 2 for 1.
