Njivice is a small coastal village located on the island of Krk. It was once a fishing village but is now a tourist destination. Krk is the largest island in the Adriatic Sea. Our friends from Chesapeake Beach, MD, Goran and Kelly Gligorovic, have friends in Croatia: Rajeev and Jelena. Kelly put us in touch with them and they own an apartment building where we were able to rent a room for five nights. We had met Jelena at the pool at Herrington Harbour South several years ago. She was the first familiar face we have seen in seven and a half months! They are both such nice people! Unfortunately (for us) this is their busy tourist season and we were not able to spend any time with them. Few Americans venture this far north preferring southern Croatia. This area is very popular with German and Hungarian tourists. So popular that most Croatians spoke to us in German initially.

What did we do? Enjoyed the view from our balcony! The only thing separating us from the Adriatic Sea was a promenade that was great for people watching.
Njivice Beach: It is a beautiful pebble beach. We continued past the beach and were walking along a dirt trail and discovered the 'nude beach' quite by accident and quite to our surprise. We mentioned our 'discovery' to Jelena who laughed and said the Germans love naked sunbathing.
Vrbnik Wineries: Vrbnik is renowned for its winemaking tradition and is famous for Vrbnička Žlahtina, a crisp white wine. We stopped at Kuća vina Ivan Katunar Winery for some wine tasting and sampled 10 different wines! All delicious! The vineyards were located offsite and we passed them driving in.
Spiaggia Sv. Marek, Sv. Marek Beach a rare sandy beach.
Krk Town: The historic city of Krk features a well-preserved medieval old town with narrow cobblestone streets, ancient city walls, and the Cathedral of St. Mary, which dates back to the 12th century.

We drove to Baška to find the old Croatian alphabet path. We found a couple and then gave up and went to Vela Plaza Baška (beach).
Krk's Cave Biserujka: The cave is famous for it's stalactite and stalagmite formations. Unfortunately there were two bus loads of school kids ahead of us and we decided not to wait around 45 minutes to explore the cave.
Drove around the island: Most of the island is so rural and peaceful and quiet. It is perfectly acceptable to find a private spot by the water, take off your clothes and sunbathe nude. So we did!

Where did we stay? As mentioned above, one of Jalena's apartments named Dundo Apartment with Dundo Restaurant directly below. It was small but fine for us and you just could not beat the view.
Where did we eat?
Dundo Restaurant convenient (right below our room) and the food was good. We had a drink with Jalena before checking in. I can't believe we didn't get a picture.

We made a pretty good dent. Dinner 🍽 on the balcony tomorrow. |
Whatcha lookin at!!! |
Restoran Kod Dide we chose this restaurant because their sidewalk sign advertised 'Hungarian Goulash'. As it is always my luck, when I ordered the Goulash, I was told it would not be ready for another 3 hours. Definitely was not coming back at 2230.
My look of disappointment! 😞 😪 |
Chicken with Mushroom Sauce and Croquettes (not Goulash) |
Šurlice and Prawn Sauce |

Homemade sandwiches with a view almost perfect!
I know you won't believe it but we found PEKARA VRBNIK the local bakery. We did pretty good and only went twice. First time we enjoyed the apple strudel -- would have liked a little more apple 🍎 but still good. Our second time we got donuts filled with chocolate. 🍫 OMG so good.
Passages Restaurant -- highly rated on Google. The food and service were good.

Sharon tried ice cream from Slastičarnica and Fratelli's. She enjoyed both but thought Slastičarnica's was creamier.
Snack at Fast Food Tonka. We wanted something quick. They were a little dry and would have went well with a cup of coffee.
How did we get here? Drove from Zadar with a short stop in the small town of Karlovaćko to find lunch.
When did we visit? 8 - 13 June 2023
Krk Island is also a great place for hiking, cycling, and exploring its beautiful landscapes, including olive groves, vineyards, and rugged coastal areas.
