Split is a Dalmatian coastal city. It is the second-largest city in Croatia. Split was originally established as a Greek colony in the 3rd century BC, known as Aspálathos. In the 4th century AD, the Roman Emperor Diocletian chose the site to build his palace, which now forms the heart of the city. The palace, known as Diocletian's Palace, is an impressive UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved Roman buildings in the world.
What did we do?
Diocletian's Palace: The centerpiece of Split's historical attractions, Diocletian's Palace is a massive complex that includes the emperor's palace, numerous shops, cafes, and residential buildings. It is a living monument, with people still residing within its walls. The palace is a maze of narrow streets, hidden courtyards, and ancient buildings that provide a unique and captivating atmosphere.
Split Old Town: Beyond Diocletian's Palace are the narrow streets of the Old Town. They are packed with shops, restaurants, and bars. The Old Town also features other historical sites such as the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, which was originally built as a mausoleum for Diocletian.
Riva Promenade: The Riva is Split's waterfront promenade, lined with palm trees and cafes. It was a great spot to stop for lunch and admire all the yachts and catamarans.
Hit the beach: Split boasts several beaches (again, pebbly) which were very popular with people soaking up the sun and swimming.
Farmers Market: Right out front our AirBnB was a huge farmers market. We took advantage of it and bought fresh fruit, prosciutto and cheese.
How did we get there? Thanks to Marija from Milna, we figured out we could take a bus and ferry from Supetar instead of waiting for the 8 pm ferry out of Milna. We caught our bus pretty much right outside our door. The bus route took us through several small towns with very small roads. It was amazing how well the driver just whipped a coach bus around the tiny corners. The bus dropped us off right at the ferry terminal.
Where did we eat?
We enjoyed dinner at SUG'S so much we went back a second night.
Sidi Cafe our afternoon yacht watching on the Promenade.
Portofino -- we started out by calling to make a reservation and were told there was nothing available. Okay, no big deal. We came up with plan B. Later, on our way to plan B, we stopped at Portofino and asked if there was anything available. "Why yes. We can seat you outside but you only have an hour. If you sit inside, take as long as you like." We sat inside. Service was excellent except there was a miscommunication on the duck breast on the menu. We had overheard from a different server that they were out of breast and had thigh. I asked and our server assured us duck was available. When my dinner arrived, it was not duck breast but leg. I asked why I didn't get breast and the server apologized. It wasn't that big a deal so I ate the leg but wasn't overly happy. (First world problems...)
Drinks before dinner! |
Goat Cheese Salad Deep fried goat cheese, mixed lettuce, nuts sundried apricots, fresh apple and honey mustard dressing |

Duck "Breast" Confit duck leg with cream of baked potatoes glazed mushroom and onions, Adriatic herbs, Raspberry cream demi glaze with basil |
Where did we stay? An AirBnB, Old Bazar Center Apartment. It was ok. A little strange having two twin beds and it was a little 'tired'. But there was a great view of the farmers market and the location was excellent!
When did we go? June 1 through 4, 2023
