Denmark 🇩🇰 - Odense: A Fairytale City Where History Meets Modern Charm

Located on the island of Funen, Odense is Denmark’s third-largest city. Best known as the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen.

What did we do?

We followed the footprints of Hans Christian Anderson around the city, we did not start at the beginning. I had a walking trip planned out and we just sort of discovered the footprints on the sidewalk and started following them.

Oluf Bagers Mødrene Gård (Oluf Bager's Mother's Yard) an historic merchant's home.

H. C. Andersens House we did not go into the Museum.

We did stroll through the gardens, H.C. Andersen Haven.

Den Gamle Kro A/S was the The Old Inn constructed in 1683.

Fattigskolen The Poor School

We are still following the footprints 👣.

Washing Site at Odense River H.C. Andersen's mother worked as a washerwoman and washed clothes in Odense Å.

We took a short detour and strolled through Eventyrhaven (Park).

Tugthuset (Penitentiary)

H.C. Andersen’s Childhood Home is a humble yellow house where the young storyteller’s imagination first took flight. We just popped our heads in for a look but didn't go very far inside.

Odense Cathedral (St. Knuds Kirke) – A Gothic masterpiece with a serene interior and the tomb of King Canute.

Restaurants/Bars:

Mitchell's Odense - local and seasonal fine dining! Our waiter, Dan, did a great job taking care of us. Our only complaint was it looked like we got billed for a 2-course dinner when we each only had one entre. Service, food and atmosphere were very good although Dan probably could have used a little help.

HOS Restaurant - We had a phenominal six-course meal. I was nervous about having so much to eat but our server ensured us the portions were small. Overall, they were but we still left pretty full. The service, food and atmosphere were outstanding. This could easily be a Michelin star restaurant.

On the right Oysters with apple,

Homemade bread
Homemade butter topped with salt and basically whipped pork lard with truffles.

Fried danish squid with
peas, kale & buttermilk

I'm not a fan of peas or squid and this dish was absolutely delicious 😋

Wolffish with potato puré,

chanterelles & chicken blanquette

Raspberry sorbet with

and mascarpone mousse

Where to Stay? Milling Plaza Odense. This was an historic hotel with small (for us) rooms. There were zero amenities in the room (no coffee maker, fridge, safe, etc). The windows were thin and there was road noise but there was pretty much no traffic after 10 and we slept really well. Breakfast buffet was good with plenty to choose from. They also provided afternoon snacks.

So you may ask, why is there a sweeping tray (their words) on the bed? It is to be placed outside your door if you wish housekeeping to enter and clean your room. What an odd way to notify housekeeping.

The elevator was so tiny. This one was for 1-3 people. We could not both fit with our suitcases.  They did have a second elevator that was for up to 8 people. Eight very small people...

How did we get here? An hour and a half train from Copenhagen to Odense.

Coffee ☕️, Tea 🍵, or Water 💧

When did we visit? 2-4 September 2025.
