Spain - Almuñécar

Almuñécar is another charming coastal town that often goes unnoticed by tourists in favor of its more famous neighbors like Malaga and Granada. And that was fine with us!

The San Miguel Castle: This ancient Moorish castle stands on a hilltop, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the town and the Mediterranean Sea. The castle's history dates back to the Roman period.

The Roman Aqueduct: Almuñécar boasts a well-preserved Roman aqueduct.

Almuñécar's 'old town' is a place to wander and discover squares, shops, and the San Cristobal Church.

Playa de San Cristobal this beach is the heart of Almuñécar's coastal scene. A promenade lined with restaurants and bars offers a vibrant atmosphere.

Playa de Velilla is another main beach in Almuñécar, where the water park and all tourist services are located.

Playa de Puerta del Mar located in the historic center. This beach is smaller.

Halloween is not celebrated like in the States. There are hardly any decorations and no trick or treating. However the bar/restaurant right below us, de Barbara restaurante, had started decorating and had a sign out about a party. So we decided to go out for a drink and there were only a few people when we arrived. Come to find out it was a birthday party for, we believe, one of the owners and it didn't start until 7pm. We didn't take any pictures of the costumes or decorations as we felt a bit out of place. We had a couple of drinks and left so as not to 'crash' the party.

We got free tater tots with a
spicy sauce with our drinks

Black Cat... not a costume.

BTW November 1st All Saints Day is a holiday in Spain.

What did we eat?

Mesón La Cantina -- We had to scan a QR code for the menu. Sharon took a chance and ordered a 'La rosca' which translates to 'Thread'. No idea how a round sandwich is a thread but it was pretty good.

Ham & Cheese Thread

Restaurante Lute y Jesús -- food and service was great. We were going to go back again but they were closed. We enjoyed a free appetizer.

Fried shrimp & cabbage appetizer

Pil Pil Prawns
(Shrimps cooked in garlic and chili)
Pasta Macaroni with Bolognese Sauce
(Spaghetti with meat sauce)

Where did we stay? An AirBnB 'Beachfront Condo hosted by Elena and Marion. We really liked this place!! The view of the Mediterranean was amazing!

How did we get here? Drove from Calahonda.

When did we visit? 30 October - 2 November 2023

We really enjoyed Almuñécar and our apartment! It's probably very crowded 'in season' but it wasn't bad 'off season'. There was still no shortage of tourists that just stop in the middle of the sidewalk to talk or look at their phones. Ahhh! We would definitely consider staying here again and for several months.

According to little Ms. Google, for the month of October, we traveled 1,083 miles. No planes or trains this month.
