Spain - Cádiz

Cádiz is located on the southwestern coast of Spain. It is one of Europe's oldest continually inhabited cities.

What did we do?

Cadiz Cathedral (Catedral de Santa Cruz) is an architectural masterpiece that includes Baroque and Neoclassical style. We did not climb the cathedral's towers for the panoramic views of the city, or explore its interior. There were not one but two cruise ships in port and we have seen plenty of cathedrals lately.

Castillo de San Sebastian -- this fortress stands at the entrance to the city's harbor, connected to the mainland by a causeway. It was closed when we arrived.

The Castle of Santa Catalina
is a star-shaped fortress located at the northern end of La Caleta beach.
It is the oldest military structure in the city. This was open AND free!

La Caleta Beach is a small picturesque beach located between two castles, San Sebastian and Santa Catalina. It's also famous for its cameo in James Bond's "Die Another Day."

Mercado Central de Abastos or the Central Market is definitely where the locals shop. This bustling market is filled with colorful stalls selling fresh seafood, fruits, vegetables, and local products. We supported several stalls.

La Pepa Bridge (Puente de la Constitución de 1812)This modern architectural wonder is named after the Spanish Constitution of 1812. It connects Cadiz to the mainland and provides stunning views of the bay. Its unique design and sweeping curves make it a fascinating addition to Cadiz's skyline.

Where did we eat?

Talento Cóctel & Bar right around the corner and they were open before 8pm. Their food was different and delicious. We enjoyed so much we went back another night.

Salmorejo Con Helado De Aove
Tartar de Salmon - Salmon Tartar

The menu said 'Salmorejo Con Helado De Aove' - Artichoke  with ham. We had no clue what we were ordering. Google Translate said, "Salmorejo with EVOO Ice Cream". We thought something was lost in translation but it wasn't. Hidden in the center was olive oil ice cream. Very tasty!

Ensaladilla De Anchoas
Gyozas De Pollo
Y Verduras - Chicken
and vegetable gyozas

Another dish where we weren't sure what we were getting was Ensaladilla De Anchoas - Talento Salad. Google Translate said, "Anchovy Salad". What we think we had was their version of a potato salad.

Our second visit we sat inside

We chose Antonio del palillo and if you have already seen my Facebook post you know I got bamboozled. We wanted the Aguacates Rellenos De Salmon (Avocado stuffed with salmon) a tapas dish for €3. It was "finished" -- the universal word for, "they don't have it". The waiter said, "I have something similar. Do you want to try the special?" We did understand what the 'special' was but I said, "Sure, why not?" If you could have seen the look on Sharon's face when they delivered the dish! It was priceless. Needless to say we did not share the octopus, but I will give her credit -- she did try two bites.

Poor guy!

Bageteria El Demonio great little sandwich shop. A lot of locals buy their bread there. The roll made the sandwich and the prices were very good. We visited them twice.

Where did we stay? An AirBnB 'Puerto San Felix with free parking' by Cadiz4Rentals.

How did we get here?  We left our AirBnB and took an Uber to the Seville train station. We were renting a car and Thrifty Car rental was right across the street. So off we go driving from Seville with a stop at the Naval Base in Rota for some much needed supplies. Well it really wasn't that easy. We get to the gate and we had to turn around to go to the office to get a vehicle pass. The one and only guy who issues the passes just left for lunch. So we had to wait a half hour just to find out we cannot go on base. The base is owned by the Spanish Navy and the U.S. are just tennants. I needed to be on orders. As I am throwing a fit, this guy asked where we were going. He offered to sponsor us, took us to the Exchange and brought us back to our car. Thank you Leo! He was a Navy Chief! Love my Chief's Mess!
