Sarlat-la-Canéda - Sarlat is a medieval town that developed around a large Benedictine abbey of Carolingian origin. The medieval Sarlat Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Sacerdos. This abbey appears in records as early as 1081 and was one of the few in the region that was not raided by the Vikings. The name for the abbey church was Saint Sacerdos by 1318; in the 20th century, it would become a cathedral under Pope John XXIII.

We arrived on a Sunday which means most places are closed. We found Pasta Di Cabri, an Italian restaurant, that was open. Rob emailed to get a reservation and got a, "No problem" response. The food was pretty good but the owner made the evening.
The owner tried his best in both French and Italian with a little English to explain what the dishes were. He was so welcoming and enthusiastic. We love a good hole-in-the-wall and this did not disappoint! We had two entrees and a bottle of wine for under $60.

Where did we stay?
Hôtel Le Renoir I booked late and we were unable to get the hotel I wanted downtown. This hotel was located right outside and about a five minute walk. I booked a family suite as I thought the regular room was going to be too small. Well, our 'suite' consisted of two twin beds on the lower level and a king in the loft. The loft was huge, big bed, bigger TV and lots of space. The problem was the bathroom was located on the lower level and at the top of the staircase, the wall jutted out creating a bang-your-head-in-the-middle-of-the-night hazard.

Believe it or not, we pushed the twin beds together and slept on the lower level. It was a huge waste of space. The hotel was 'ok', breakfast was pricey for what we got but at least we were able to park on the street for free.
How did we get there? We drove a little over two hours from Saint-Émilion to Sarlat-la-Canéda.
When did we visit? 19 - 23 October, 2025
We were not born to work, we were born to be those people you see constantly traveling and living their best life.
