Croatia - Korčula

Korčula (pronounced kor-chu-la) - nestled in the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea, Korčula Island is a true hidden gem. It is also known as Dubrovnik's Little Sister since it is located just a short ferry ride away from Dubrovnik and a definitely a quieter alternative. Or, as our AirBnB host explained," Dubrovnik is Korčula's big sister". We loved its medieval charm, narrow streets, red-roofed houses and wandering through its labyrinthine alleys. It's even said to be the birthplace of Marco Polo.

What did we do?

Enjoyed walking the walled city of Old Town. It takes about 15 minutes. Unless you like to poke around in shops like Sharon does. Like Dubrovnik, it had a wall surrounding it. We also explored the surrounding area outside of Old Town.

Side note: Sharon finally fell (slipped) down the stairs. 😅🤣
It was a 2-part slow motion fall. Luckily, it was only a skinned knee.

Scabbed up nicely

St. Mark's Cathedral and Bell Tower: Dominating the little square at Korčula's heart is a magnificent 15th-century cathedral, built from Korčula limestone. We enjoyed looking at all the paintings and sculptures in the nave with its 90 foot ceiling. We also climbed the very narrow spiral staircase to the bell tower and were greeted with spectacular views! It was very tight walking around the perimeter. And, yes the bells still ring. Ask us how we know.

Nosy me... let's look inside
OMG! A part fell out.
Don't tell anyone

A thoughtful moment

Rented a scooter. We wanted to see more of the island and a scooter rental seemed like the perfect thing to do. I asked for a 200cc but since I do not have a motorcycle license, could only get a 50cc. I wasn't sure that would be enough power for two -- especially on hills but it was perfect! We drove along the coast and stopped at two beaches: Vaja Bay and Samograd Bay. Both beaches were pebbly but the water was crystal clear and there was usually only one other couple. The ride along the coast was absolutely beautiful. We cannot believe how clear and blue the water is!

Lunch in Racisce

We then rode in the opposite direction to the town of Lumbarda. Fertile soils and a favorable climate make the island an ideal destination for wine and olive oil production. There are plenty of vineyards to enjoy wine-tasting. The island is renowned for its local white wine, Grk, and red wine, Plavac Mali. We stopped at one winery so Sharon could enjoy some tasting but arrived too late as they were closing. There was no shortage of local wine and beer at our grocery store!

We spent a little time on
Vela Przina Beach. This beach had sand! The water was too cold for us but there were a few hearty souls swimming.

The next day we rented a scooter again and received a 20% discount for renting two days in a row. We ended up going back to Samograd Bay and spent a couple of hours on the pebbly beach. It was so peaceful and quiet.

How did we get here? TP Line ferry.

Where did we eat?

Bordo Wine & Food - we chose this place because they had a 4.9 rating on Google and it was a 2 minute walk. It was windy and we wanted to sit inside but they did not have inside seating. They sat us beside the tree and gave Sharon blankets. So glad we decided to stay. The food was excellent and service was very good.

At Home, there are pros and cons to everything 🙃, one of the cons to our current lifestyle is always eating out.  We usually have breakfast in, and when it works Sharon does try to cook.

Gelato Bar - the mounds of Gelato drew us in and it was good but not spectacular.

Konoba Tramonto we chose this place because they had Mussels Alla Bousara and a pretty good view. Well... no mussels.

Where did we stay? We stayed at Asja's Place, an AirBnB right outside Old Town. This was the perfect location. A minute walk from the ferry ⛴, bakery, grocery store, and we could see the entrance to Old Town. It was bright and cheery and less than $70 a night. The host left us a welcome gift of apple juice and homemade cake. The cake was delicious so we asked for the recipe and what it was called. There was no recipe. It was an improvisation. 😋

When did we visit? May 22 - 25, 2023

"To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries."
